Newspaper regulation: blog tasks

 Newspaper regulation: blog tasks

Task One: Media Magazine article and questions

Read the Media Magazine article: From Local Press to National Regulator in MM56 (p55). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here. Once you've read the article, answer the following questions:

1) Keith Perch used to edit the Leicester Mercury. How many staff did it have at its peak and where does Perch see the paper in 10 years' time?

The Leicester mercury at its peak had 130 staff working, Perch sees the paper being very expensive and having a small circulation.

2) How does Perch view the phone hacking scandal?

Perch argues he was against the phone hacking scandal as it was an invasion of privacy was not used for the basis of news but rather own wicked agenda.

3) What does IPSO stand for and how does it work?

IPSO stands for independent press standards organisation, they parent and protect the news values and make sure newspapers and magazines uphold both ethical and legal rights of an induvial.

4) What is Perch's view of newspaper ownership?

Perch suggests that newspaper ownership should be up to audiences making the decision to invest their money and time into news outlets.

5) Do you agree with his view that broadcast news should have less regulation so that TV channels can support particular political parties or people?

I would disagree with this view because if broadcasted news were to be regulated less then this would equate to TV channels creating/changing political ideas rather than reporting on news. This is because impartial news means ethical and right information for audiences to develop their own views rather than feeding them an idea to upload.

Task Two: Newspaper regulation essay

Write an essay on your blog answering the following question:

What are the arguments for and against statutory regulation of the newspaper industry?

Your answer should be at least 500 words and feature a minimum of four paragraphs. Make sure you cover both sides of the debate.

I have done this on paper instead.
