Y13 Baseline assessment learner response

 Baseline assessment learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW - Q1 + Q2 are solid although I think we can improve further for next time. Q3 is the key area holding you back - you started off very well so we just need to add consistency to develop a complete 25-marker response.

EBI - Need to revise Life Hacks, this means revise media effects theories and in Q3 you need detailed and specific examples from the two CSPs. Revise/ learn this for future exams.
Clay Shirky is relevant to this question but revise this as your point is unclear.

2) Focusing on the BBC Life Hacks question, write three ways it helps to fulfil the BBC's mission statement that you didn't include in your original assessment answer. Use the mark scheme for ideas.

Informs - They inform their audience through having topics that are relevant to their demographics life, this means things that they're experiencing such as managing debts, dealing with identity and school help.

Entertainment - They entertain their audience through the Radio 1 playlist which creates diversion from their personal life.

Educate -  They educate their audience through addressing topics such as mental health and sex education which isn't talked about enough in schools.

3) Question two asked you how useful media effects theories are in understanding the audience response to War of the Worlds. Complete the following:
  • Gerbner's Cultivation theory: useful or not useful? Why?
- This theory would be useful in understanding the audiences response to War of the worlds because it suggests that audiences were susceptible to believing this broadcast was real due to the warning of "We interrupt this broadcast to bring to you" which means that they would've thought that something alarming was about to be said.

  • Frankfurt School's Hypodermic Needle model: useful or not useful? Why?
- This theory would not be useful as it would've have stated that audiences are passive so they would all collectively believe this broadcast was real which is really simplistic and the media would see it as "empty vessels."

  • Stuart Hall's Reception theory: useful or not useful? Why?
This theory would've been useful because it refers to understanding the audiences' response from three different points the preferred, negotiated and oppositional reading. This suggests that some reactions were either genuine or modified to fit the media's panic on the broadcast.

4) Write a full essay plan for the 25-mark Magazines question. The mark scheme contains plenty of ideas you can use here. Your plan should include notes/bullet points addressing the following:
  • Introduction: one sentence answering the original question and laying out your argument clearly.

  • Paragraph 1 content:
- Audience pleasures (uses and gratifications theory)
- Changing the face of masculinity (Running man) but also reinforcing hypermasculinity through weight loss programmes and diets.
- Cover lines decoding and typography.

  • Paragraph 2 content:
- Decline in print due to digital media (their sales and readership going down)
- Since of comfort for older audience as central image and cover lines still remain the same
-Their digital platforms are different with more ad based content.

  • Paragraph 3 content:
- Oh Comely niche audience
- Uses and gratifications ( Demographics of their reader base)
- Content is limited but that's what attracts their audience

  • Paragraph 4 content:
- The change within the print and traditional magazine industry affecting their readership circulation.
- However, they're doing well in terms of keeping up (diversification)
- Small independent publication.

  • Conclusion: sum up your argument a final time in one sentence
- Oh comely is seen as more successful in the sense it was launched in the digital era and adapted to those changes within the magazine industry whereas men's health held it off until their circulation started to decline.

5) Finally, identify three key skills/topics you want to work on in A Level Media this year before the final exams in June.

1) One key skill I would work on before my final exams would be to understand the CSPs in more detail so than I can talk about it with clear points.

2) Another skill would be to plan out the 20/25 marker questions so that I can keep track of what I'll be writing about, this is because the structure and points were unclear which would've marked me down.

3) The last skill I would improve on before my final exams would be my timing as that was an issue for me to keep track of when to stop and start a question.
