'MIGRAIN 3 Assessment - Learner response'

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: Two very solid answers showing some good media analysis. It's 10% up on your last assessment and offers plenty of theory
- The in-depth analysis of gender representation was well written and structured.

EBI: Revise Mulvey + Van Zoonen.
- Writtern English, too many spelling mistakes on your points as some of them weren't clear which means you're not getting the marks.
- You need to learn the spelling the spelling for critical words.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Write down the number of marks you achieved for the two questions: _/8; _/12. If you didn't achieve full marks in a question, write a bullet point on what you may have missed.

Question 1 - 5/8, a point which I had missed would've been to refer to the new fragrance (masculine/feminine) suggests that people should behave, look and smell a certain way to perform their gender, this would've linked Judith Butler's theory of "Gender as a performance".

Question 2 - 6/12, a point which I had missed would've been to refer to the female model in figure 1 as evidence for Van Zoonen theory regarding representation of women as she is clearly objectified and resisted to a secondary role.

3) For Question 2 on the social and cultural contexts of gender representations, identify three potential points in the mark scheme that you didn't include in your answer.

1) One point would've been that the "good girl/ bad boy" campaign reinforces negative gender stereotypes which contrasted with the recent Gillette advert that challenges toxic masculinity.

2) Another point would've been this campaign reinforces Judith Butler's theory of gender trouble as gender is seen as a contextual and social construct made to subject beings into a box and it supports the idea that we are adhere to social norms both in sexuality (heterosexuality) and gender roles.

3) A theorist that I should included would've been Gaunlett as he argues that masculinity is evolving and that the term of masculinity is in "crisis" is exaggerated.

4) Having read the whole mark scheme, pick out one media theory that you didn't include in this assessment and summarise it briefly here so you can use it confidently in future.

One media theorist that i will briefly discuss to help my next assessment would be Van Zoonen idea that women's body in the media is seen as a "spectacle" and that it is for the benefit of the Male audience which ties with Mulvey's theory of the "male gaze".

5) Based on your experience in this assessment, identify three aspects of Media (e.g. skills/particular theories/examples) that you need to work on for your next assessment.

In the next assessment I should work on my timing as that was what put me down because I didn't write due timing issues. Another aspect of media in which I should include would be Van Zoonen gender theory as I had learnt it but no in depth which would've put my grade down. Another problem would've been including theses theories to the figure given.
