MIGRAIN: January assessment learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW:There is a lot of potential here, you've made progress on your last assessment (more than 10%) and Q2 shows good knowledge and revision. Q4 is the start of a good essay-perhaps timing is an issue.

EBI: Revise public service broadcasting,
- Work on essay structure and perhaps revise some additional audience effects theories.
- see the mark scheme for more here.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

Q1 - One point I missed would be that i didn't include the preferred,Oppositional and negotiated readings this would've helped build my analysis. Another point would be...

Q2 - One point that i missed would be that i could've included was synergy as another strategy to increase their control. This means that they could maximise profit from a brand by branching into other platforms, merchandise or products.

Q3 - One potential point i could've added would be the refuting argument could've been stronger by including that no one pays the licence fee. Another point would be that its harder to watch PSB as more streaming sites are available such as Netflix.

Q4 - One potential points i could've added is the cultural experiences to help improve my essay. Another thing i could've made a conclusion to give an overall viewpoint.

3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment? You may also want to think here whether you had completed all the original blog tasks from last term before doing the assessment.

On a scale of 1 -10 the revision and preparation i did for this assessment would be 4 out of 10. I've completed all the blog tasks before the half-term however i had not given them that thought which would've affected my overall grade.

4) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.

I managed to gain 5/6 marks which a good mark in my opinion, however i could've included another point to secure full marks. This means that if i added synergy as a strategy for conglomerates to increase their power and this is because they can then maximise profit from branching into other platforms, merchandise or products.

5) Look at your answer for Question 3. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?

For question 3 i managed i got 3/9 which my opinion i could've improved this mark. I got this mark due to my lack of revision on this topic however to improve this mark i could've included points and stronger explanations for each side of the argument such as in the refuting argument i should've added that no one pays the licence fees which means that they wont be making profits to fund the BBC. Another point i could've added would be that the younger generations don't watch live TV in the same way older generations do. This means that due access to streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon prime which evidently dominant the TV markets.

6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 4 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.

A refuting reason as to why the media is not damaging but its how audiences engage with it. This evident from Blumler & Katz "uses and gratifications" theory which includes that audiences are active and seek our media they wish to engage with. This would suggest that the media is not dangerous as audiences have a high control over with the content they consume. This means that they will consume media that relates to them so that if they wish to engage content that is harmful is their responsibility. Therefore, this theory is linking that there is a linear correlation between audiences and what they engage with is what they feel represents them or is an escape. Another refuting argument as to why the media is not as dangerous as some people make it out to be is Moral panics(Cohen) could be used to argue that the media does not have a damaging affect on audiences. This means this is just another scapegoat for peoples fear to have meaning and for them to blame society for their problems. This is because people fear what they don't understand meaning that they won't take responsibility that this a damaging effect is blown out of proportion as they can't tame idea that audiences have control over what content they engage with.

In conclusion, the media has damaging effects on what you consume depending on age and mental intake but overall its the media that an individuals consumes that is on his/her/they responsibility and the media shouldn't be blamed for outbursts caused by that"lone wolf".
