Introduction to feminism: blog tasks

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?

Laura bates decided to start the "Everyday sexism project" because she wanted to share her story and what she would go through on a daily basis and wanted to create a platform that accepted and allowd victims to share their story.

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?

The Everyday sexism project links to post - feminism ('The term postfeminism is used to describe reactions against contradictions and absences in feminism'). As it shows the improvement that has been achieved but has a long way to go. This means that the Everday sexism projects shares unique stories which have let women open up and bring small changes to their everyday life.

3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?

New technology was a essential to the success of the Everyday sexism as it provided a way of connecting many women and men together to share their stories and learn from eachother. This shows that the stories were similar and the connection grew which was beneficial to the writer writing their stories to the audience as it meant change was happening through a screen.

4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?

I feel like the Everyday sexism project will hopefully not be needed however the reality stands it will probably be. This is because connecting women and men together will be beneficial for the change and the tackling of sexism. However, even in the 21st century people's mindset hasn't evolved and still carry the misogynistic nature. Which means we will be needing the Everyday project as a stepping stone to tackle sexism as a whole. The future of feminism in my opinion will start being recognized as a more positive light.

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?

Network feminism is the division of feminist waves to give them cultural context in which they began. It is a problem because of the misconceptions and prejudice such as the idea that rape or coercive sex is justified if a woman is wearing provocative clothing, the huge gender gap even though the equal pay legislation has been passed.

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave ‘networked feminism’?

The first wave of feminism started in the early 20th century which mainly focused on the suffrage. The second wave began in the 1990s which was focused on Equal pay Act in 1970s and growth of equal rights. The third wave had believed to be entered in the 1990s. The fourth is wave has been known as networked feminism which tackled issues such as sexual harassment and equality issues in modern technology. I don't think we are in the fourth wave to an extent as the whole wave ideology is just another way to label what some people think were the right feminism. This could be used by non-feminist to slander feminism but I do believe that networked feminism is changing the ways and tackling social inequality through the media which had connected many people together and has created a interesting place for topic and opinions.

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a 100-word summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.

The "Everyday sexism campaign" which was started by Laura Bates in 2012. This was a website she created to share her experiences that she and her users has faced. The responses she received were mixed with some saying "Again and again that...sexism is no longer a problem, that women are equal". However, her stories sent by many women proved that sexism still plays a part in society and had 50,000 stories of sexist experiences made by 2013. To this day its the largest visible feminist digital campaigns due to their user-generated content. The HeforShe campaign is led by Emma Watson. This campaign focuses on male support of gender equality and the ideal connection between the people as a whole issue. She highlighted "Feminism is not about promoting matriarchy, but solidarity". Her digital platform was committed to help women's issue online which had generated lots of responses. The whole consensus behind her campaign is to remove and re-correct the blighted traditional feminism. However, there has been critics as people think that her campaign is too reliant on men and is undermining the empowerment of women. The FCKH8 campaign or potty mouth princess was a video that went viral. This movement focuses on modern representation of girls and the inequality they face. This video is subverting the representation of young girls trying to highlight the imbalance and how they're not staying silent. However, this was a profitable company that try to exploit the feminist movement to sell t-shirts which created a ton of backlash. This created a digital aspect which left the campaign open to numerous parodies mocking the movement of feminists. The other benefit is that the existing of young strong women still haven't backed down and are still confronting issues that affect young women such as inequality in the school system, rape culture and the sexualisation of women. The Girl Can campaign was the first fitness movement for women that didn't shame or exclude women of different sizes but embranced them. This campaign helped women share photos, quotes or videos without shame and the "normal" sexual exploitation of women's fitness advert. However, the campaign didn't go without backlash but by feminists activist as well.

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?

In my opinion I believe that feminism is a movement that cater to both genders as it is about gender equality and balance in society. The digital age of media plays a big role in influencing the feminist culture as more people have come to terms with the idea and are slowly becoming accepting as they've understood what they actually stand for. The misconceptions are coming to terms and people now understand that its just a way to discredit the movement. However, not everyone as anti-feminists are still finding ways to discredit their movement. The concept of the Fourth wave I believe is just an extension of the Everyday sexism project as it develops onto the third wave feminism only adding the digital media and connecting more people.
