Read the Factsheet and complete the following questions/tasks:


1) What is regulation and why do media industries need to be regulated?

Regulation is the system that looks after sectors media industries to report anything they feel ins't appropriate or they aren't acting fairly. media industries need to be regulated because they need to monitor the activities of certain industries so that if they audiences need to complain they have a place they take up their compliant with. 


2) What is OFCOM responsible for?

OFCOM are responsible for regulating certain areas of the media industry such as television, radio, telephone service and some aspects of the internet. 


3) Look at the section on the OFCOM broadcasting code. Which do you think are the three most important sections of the broadcasting code and why?

1) section 1 - protecting the under-eighteens, this is because having harmful content shown on TV could expose them to acting out on what they've seen and they are vulnerable to those actions. 

2) section 3 - crime, this is because having young people exposed to television that shows a lot gore and crime could have them manipulated and they could act out. 

3) section 8 - privacy, this is because privacy is something very delicate and should be respected. 


4) Do you agree with OFCOM that Channel 4 was wrong to broadcast 'Wolverine' at 6.55pm on a Sunday evening? Why?

No i do not agree with the OFCOM regulation as the rating for "wolverine" is a PG-13 which is suitable for those timings and means that the explicit scenes of violence is limited. 


5) List five of the sections in the old Press Complaints Commission's Code of Practice. 

section 1- Accuracy 

section 2- opportunity to reply

section 3- privacy

section 4- harassment

section 5- discrimination


6) Why was the Press Complaints Commission criticised?

They were heavenly criticised because it lacked statutory power. This means that a newspaper has been found to "breached the rules". 


7) What was the Leveson enquiry and why was it set up?

The leveson enquiry is "culture, practice and ethics of the press". this was the result of phone hacking. 


8) What was the PCC replaced with in 2014?

It was replaced with the Independent press standard organisations. 

9) What is your opinion on press regulation? Is a free press an important part of living in a democracy or should newspapers face statutory regulation like TV and radio?

In my opinion press regulation is necessary but to an extent if it affects a company and what they stand for then i wont be respected. I feel newspaper should regulate themselves on stories that aren't from another humans issue. 


10) Why is the internet so difficult to regulate?

Its hard to regulate the internet because there so much the government can control and the internet that we use daily is on the surface there the part of the internet that is hard to trace and regulate causing problems.
